About the Program:
Turner Building Science & Design has been coordinating efforts in commissioning the building enclosure of a college residence hall. The building owner has set a goal for a maximum air leakage across the building enclosure not to exceed 0.25 CFM/sqft at 50 Pa pressure difference though all components of the building enclosure on all 6 sides. The effort included TBS, working as the commissioning agent, developing the commissioning specifications, reviewing the pre-bid design documents with respect to the continuity of the air barrier and design details of the sealing of penetrations through the building enclosure, as well as recommending methods and devices to increase the envelope thermal efficiency. The construction phase effort included testing wall and roof sections early in construction of the building to allow the contractor time for revision of construction techniques, if necessary, in order to achieve a tight building enclosure and helping to resolve variations in details made necessary by substitution f materials. This presentation will cover the approach and lessons learned, as well as the results of the efforts of the building team to achieve the owner’s goal.
