Program Topics

t Evaluating Fuel Sources for Cost, Efficiency and Indoor Air QualityPresenters:  Steven Caulfield, Turner Building Science, Harrison, Maine and David Clay, Mechanical Services, Inc., Portland, Maine
A thorough evaluation of various types of fuels and fuel sources that are currently available to building owners and operators.  This session will include discussion of:

  1. Cost analysis of fuel types and their efficiencies
  2. Life Cycle Analysis:  the costs of installation, conversion, and maintenance
  3. Impact on the indoor (and outdoor) environment

t Evaluating Building Insulation Systems
Presenter:  Terry Brennan, Camroden Associates - Westmoreland, NY

An in-depth look at insulation systems from a cost, performance and building science perspective.  Includes discussion of:

  1. Cost analysis of various insulation products and their proper applications
  2. Performance of insulation systems, and how performance can be affected by various applications
  3. Impact of moisture, compaction, air movement on various insulation products and systems
  4. Layering the building enclosure to manage rain, heat, air flow and avoid condensation (mold growth potential of enclosures)
  5. VOCs and fiber released by insulation materials
  6. Proper use and installation of various systems.

t Foundations:  Financial and IAQ Benefit of Complete Foundation Insulation  Presenter:  William A. Turner, Turner Building Science, Harrison, ME

t Residential Basement Retrofits  Presenter:  David Johnston, David Johnston & Co., Gorham, Maine
Renovating basement spaces for energy efficiency and/or human occupancy is difficult in Maine.  Basement renovations have to consider numerous issues, including foundation insulation, materials selection, moisture management, and building systems (heating/cooling, washer/dryer, drainage, etc.) Failure to properly address these issues can lead to poor energy efficiency and poor indoor air quality.  A thorough how-to and why session.

t Maine Home Energy Use Study: What the Data Reveals About
Indoor Air Quality in the Wake of Rising Fuel Costs

Presenter:  Norman Anderson, American Lung Association of Maine

Mr. Brennan has worked on a number of EPA projects over the years.  Recently Mr. Brennan has contributed to the EPA moisture control guide for commercial buildings.  During the 1990s Mr. Brennan helped to author the EPA/NIOSH document Building Air Quality: A Guide for Building Owners and Property Managers.  At around the same time he developed curriculum for and taught a series of EPA workshops on indoor air quality for public health professionals. In the 1980s he helped to develop and implement EPA training programs for mitigation of indoor radon problems.  In the early 1980s he conducted field research on indoor radon on projects sponsored by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and the USEPA.

  • Steven M. Caulfield is a registered Professional Engineer (mechanical) and a Certified Industrial Hygienist.  Steve has focused on indoor air quality, industrial hygiene, and engineering design for more than 17 years.  He has conducted mechanical system commissioning and designed and implemented construction containment monitoring operations in occupied facilities.  Steve has conducted ventilation evaluations as part of the USEPA BASE Large Building Air Quality Study and conducted environmental assessments of schools for asthma studies in conjunction with the University of Connecticut.  Steve is a current Board Member of the Maine Indoor Air Quality Council.

  • David Clay is Director of Product and Energy Services at Mechanical Services/Maine Controls Inc., a Maine owned company that provides HVAC, Refrigeration, and Energy Management services to commercial, institutional and government clients.   Previously, he was Manager of Maine Controls for twelve years and DDC Controls Application Engineer for eight years.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University and is a Licensed Professional Engineer.
